Patient Non Compliance—Wake up health plans!

“About half or more of all patients do not take their medicines as prescribed. About 11 percent of all hospital admissions and 23 percent of nursing home admissions are associated with patients failing to comply with drug regimens”, said Craig Swenson, Dean of the college of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences at Purdue University.

“Compliance is a major problem,” Sewnson said, “any tool that can help people remember how and when to take their medications is a good thing.”

“Our Pharmacovigilance is a dynamic plan that assesses education needs, medications, therapeutic and adverse effects. This allows the PharmD to intervene to increase compliance and ensure the best outcome”, says Dr. Stephen Vogt, CEO of BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy. “This tool has allowed us to measurably demonstrate exceptional compliance and improved outcomes. We feel this provides a real value-based pharmacy model versus price based models.

FDA Orders Stronger Warnings for Arthirits Drugs

Sept. 4th—The AP reported that the Food and Drug administration is ordering stronger warnings on four medications used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis.

The drugs—Humira, Cimzia, Enbrel and Remicade—work by suppressing the immune system, and the FDA says that can expose some patients to serious even fata, fungal infections. The agency said it has received 240 reports of one such type of infection called histoplasmosis. In at least 21 of the cases, doctors didn’t initially recognize the problem and 12 of the patients died.

Patients should stop taking their medication and call the doctor immediately if they develop persistant fever, cough, shortness of breath and fatigue.

What to know about Oral Chemo Therapies

Oral chemo’s may be right for some people but not for others. Oral chemotherapies may have bad side effects. It is important to take all medications as ordered by your caregiver so that it can help cure your cancer.

Before beginning oral chemo, you should discuss your concerns and questions with your caregiver, this includes consulting the qualified specialty doctors of Pharmacy at BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy.

How Does Chemotherapy Work?

In your body, there are healthy cells that divide and grow to make more healthy cells. Cancer cells do not divide and grow normally. Cancer cells multiply much more quickly than normal cells. This is how they take over normal cells. Your body can not fight off these cancer cells because they grow so rapidly.

Chemotherapy prevents cancer cells from growing and dividing. Chemo may also prevent the spread of cancer to other parts of your body. Chemo directly attacks these rapidly dividing cells. The bad news is that chemo also harms healthy cells. These cells will usually repair themselves when you are done with chemo.

How Long Will I Need To Use Oral Chemo?

Your caregiver will decide how long you will need to take your chemo. The kind of cancer you have will affect how long you will take your chemo. Different chemos may be used together.

Oral chemo directions range from Daily, Weekly, once or twice a month, or even several times per day. Length of therapy may be from several months or longer and is often given in cycles. This means you will take your chemo for a period of time and then take a break from it. This will allow your body to grow new, healthy cells.

How Will I Feel After I Take My Chemo?

You may be tired for a few days or longer after you begin, even to tired to work or perform other activities. You may feel nauseated and experience vomiting. Follow your caregivers instructions about rest and activity after treatments.

What Are The Side Effects Of Chemotherapy?

  • Blood Problems such as anemia
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Flu-like Symptoms
  • Hair Loss
  • Infection—Chemo harms healthy white blood cells.
  • Kidney or Bladder Problems
  • Nausea or Vomiting
  • Nerve and Muscle Problems
  • Pain
  • Poor Appetite
  • Problems with memory or mood
  • Sexual problems
  • Skin Problems

Assisting Health Plans / Employers

As Health plans continue to struggle with losses, it is the goal of BioPlus—through our PayerAssist program—to assist these health plans as well as the employers they serve, in saving money.

Too many health plans are handing over TOTAL prescription benefit management control to their PBMs. PBMs were created to simply manage the claims. Now they are filling drugs, determining copay structures, collecting rebates from manufacturers and whatever else they are allowed to get away with.

This problem continue to plague our society. Too much high cost medication is being sent out to patients at any given time. Patient outcomes are no better than they were at a retail pharmacy. These PBMs compete on cost and in order to do this they must cut their services, that’s why mail order was always such a cheap option. But is mail order / PBM pharmacy the appropriate choice for specialty drugs? Consider the value of an outcomes based Specialty Pharmacy. BioPlus provides proof of the value of successful outcomes.

Not only the value for the payer, but value for employers who are absorbing these costs as well as the costs of lost employees, disability issues, hospitalization costs and more.

If you are a health plan or an employer, contact us for more information. Proven Value through better Outcomes!
