Bobby Murcer Amazing Recovery from Brain Tumor

Bobby Murcer Regardless of what type of fan you are and who you are a fan of, even the folks in Boston have to be watching this story.

Bobby Murcer, 61 year old Yankee favorite, has been battling a brain tumor for over a year and a half.

He had been admitted into an experimental treatment program for the cancer at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston after they discovered the tumor Christmas of 2006.

Over the past few decades, there has not been any significant medical breakthroughs for brain cancer and the prognosis is never good.

Schering-Plough Corporation is initiating two large Phase III studies of boceprevir

The study will include patients chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1. One study will be in previously untreated (naive) patients and the other in patients who failed prior treatment (relapsers and nonresponders), an area of great unmet medical need. The two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies will evaluate the efficacy of boceprevir in combination with PEGINTRON(TM) (peginterferon alfa-2b) and REBETOL(R) (ribavirin, USP) compared to standard of care with PEGINTRON and REBETOL alone. The Company said the two pivotal studies will run concurrently and are projected to enroll a total of more than 1,400 patients at U.S. and international sites (see also Schering-Plough Corporation).

Jon Lester Returns from Battle with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma to pitch a No-Hitter

On May 19th, Jon Lester threw a No-hitter against the Royals. A feat that is amazing in itself. But for someone who had to face Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, and return to the thing he loved and reach that level of success...truly amazing.

Non hodgkins Lymphoma (NHL) is cancer of the lymphatic system. Over time, lymphoma cells replace the normal cells in the bone marrow. This causes bleeding problems and infections. As the lymphoma cells spread, the body becomes less and less able to produce blood cells that carry oxygen to other tissues or to protect itself from infection.

Each year there are approximately 50,000 new cases with 25,000 ending in death.

There are many treatment options including Biologics.

American Academy of Dermatology issues new guidelines for the management of psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis

“As a result of the impartial analysis to the most current guidelines which will help enhance the quality of care for patients and ultimately their safety,” said dermatologist C. William Hanke, MD, FAAD, president of the Academy. “The guidelines for Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, which focus on the use of biologics, are the first phase of the Academy’s efforts. The Academy is currently working on a second phase of these guidelines which will provide evidence-based advice for the management of psoriasis with topical therapies, ultraviolet light therapy, and systemic non biologic therapies for psoriasis.”

An estimated 6-7 million Americans are affected by psoriasis and the presence of psoriatic arthritis in the general U.S. population has been estimated to affect 300,000 and 750,000 individuals.

New Analysis Shows Efficacy of Remicade® in Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis...

Data from a new analysis of the Active Ulcerative Colitis trials showed that at week 8 more than 60% of patients with moderately to severe active Ulcerative Colitis (UC) receiving Remicade achieved clinical response regardless of disease duration.

Investigators also reported that at week 30, significant improvements were maintained with nearly half of the Remicade treated patients having a clinical response.

Significant improvements in disease remission and mucosal healing were also reported at weeks 8 and 30 among patients receiving Remicade and meeting disease duration criteria.

This information was presented in May at Digestive Disease Week (DDW)

“The data is encouraging because we see that Remicade is an effective treatment option for patients with active Ulcerative Colitis, whether recently diagnosied or struggling with the condition for many years,” said Dr. Bruce Sands, Associate Professor of Medicine and study investigator. “Regardless of disease duration patients receiving Remicade showed significant improvements.”
