Patient Compliance

"Drugs don't work in patients who
don't take them."
— C. Everett Koop, M.D.

Patient compliance was the motivator behind BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy services. One of the biggest concerns with taking a long-term, high-risk treatment for a chronic illness has always been "How do I make sure that my patient takes their medication on time, as scheduled and for the entire duration of the prescription?"

Compliance is the first domino in a row. If compliance falls, the chain reaction starts with wasted insurance claims, more frequent doctor office and ER visits, long duration of treatment, additional illnesses that sometimes stem from the more serious chronic illness and so on and so on.

Exhibit 1-Many Patients Take Drugs Incorrectly, Infrequently, or Not at All.

Surprisingly, a large number of chronic patients are non compliant. For one reason or another treatments are not being used as directed. It is extremely difficult for physician office to monitor how a patient is taking their medication.

Why would a chronic patient be noncompliant...?

Exhibit 2 - Most Patients Actively Choose Whether to Take Medicine as Directed

It is most interesting to note that the highest reason for noncompliance is: SOMETIMES FORGET TO USE OR REFILL. Closely followed by: DON’T WANT THE SIDE EFFECTS

At BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy, we feel that it is the duty of a pharmacy to remind patients when it is nearing time to refill, coordinating with physicians to the refill needs of their patients. As a pharmacy that specializes, it is also our duty to assist with side effects management. We are there 24 hours a day to discuss what symptoms patients are feeling and advise on what can be done to minimize those side effects.

That is why BioPlus specializes in PHARMACEUTICAL CARE.

Most often the assumption is made that patients who are non compliant "just don’t take enough responsibility" regarding their prescription needs.

Based on the above survey the best option for patient compliance is to submit a prescription for a patient directly to the pharmacy. If a patient starts out having to search for medication, verify their coverage, then that patient feels that they can make their own decision regarding their pharmaceutical care.
